Friday Updates

  • We came in number 3 in the school with 87% in Spirit Wear-Awesome job!
  • The read-in was a nice way to end our Friday!  The kids loved the popcorn as well.  Thank you to Mrs. Whelan and Mrs. McIlhinney who were our parent readers this week and last week!
  • Progress skills checklists went home today along with access to Study Island and online textbook codes.  Please do not change the password for Study Island (even though it tells you to) because it would be way too difficult for all of the kids to remember it to use at school.  Thanks!
  • Next week is our assessment week - so there will be no spelling (which also means no spelling contract!), vocabulary, or story test.  :)
  • Lifetime Award party is on Tuesday!  That will be really exciting for the kiddos that raised over $175 to go!
  • The Awards Pep Rally is next Friday, October 7.  We are so proud to be one of the few classes going!!
  • Daily Multiplication timings begin on Tuesday.  Please look for the nightly letter.  We will start with the square numbers, then 2's, 5's, and continue.  Please study flashcards daily and allow your kids to practice using online games!
  • We talked a lot about asking for help directly or sticking a post-it note on my desk for individual questions which has been really successful.  We are also working under a no-loud voices mantra in the classroom.  At the end of day 4, the kids said they needed my "regular" voice for the spelling test, otherwise, it was all calm, all whispers, all week.  :)  The kids and I really like it.
  • I am looking forward to conferences the next 3 weeks.  Please email me if you need to reschedule or need a reminder of our scheduled time.
  • As always, I have an open door policy.  The children are my number 1 priority-they are the reason I come to work each day!  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email me.
Have a great weekend!

Take a look at the kids enjoying their Reward Read In!

Gwinnett Gladiators Bookmark Program

Medlock Bridge is teaming up with the Gwinnett Gladiators to promote reading for fun.

The Gwinnett Gladiators Hat Trick for Reading Program is designed to help stimulate interest in reading among Elementary and Middle School aged children.

Each student will be given a Gladiators bookmark and asked to read at least three books during a specified time period (generally four to six weeks.)

Students who read at least three books and track them on their bookmark will receive a voucher for two free tickets to either the November 5th game vs the Reading Royals or the November 6th game vs. the Toledo Storm .  The voucher also enables you to purchase up to four additional seats at a reduced rate of $8.00.

So,  be on the lookout for your Gladiator’s bookmark and get ready to score a Hat Trick for Reading.  Bookmarks will be delivered in mid September. **They went home today!

We will need the bookmarks back by  October 10th.   So, your students have plenty of time to read three books.  Students just fill it out and return it to me.  It doesn’t matter what they read.

When:  This Friday at 1:30pm (parent reader coming in at 2:00!)
What to bring:  Kids can bring a small blanket or towel to lay down on (since the floor is now tiled) and a comfort item (pillow or stuffed animal) as well as a chapter to read.  Kids are also allowed to bring in popcorn!  Yahoo!
-------------------------------------------------------
Multiplication begins!

Dear Parents,
We are beginning our math unit on multiplication.  Each child must learn their multiplication facts!  The only way to succeed with multiplication is through the memorization of facts.
We will be using a program called Multiplication Facts in Seven Days.  Each night you will receive a letter with the facts that must be memorized as part of your child’s homework.  He/she will be given a timed assessment the next day on those facts.  These grades will be included in his/her math averages.
Some suggestions for additional multiplication practice are flashcards and on line multiplication websites (http://www.multiplicationcity.com/      http://www.ixl.com/     http://www.multiplication.com/)
As always, if you have questions, please email your child’s math teacher.

Algebra notes

Is your child having trouble on the algebra questions on the last page of the study guide?  Take a look here for some help:

Algebra:
Pictures/shapes stand for something we don’t know.  Use a related fact (fact family) to solve.
Example:    + 3 = 5  What is ∆ ?  Well if we know something plus 3 = 5, then 5-3 would tell us the answer is 2.  Check it-2+3=5 J

  + 8 = 16  What is ∆ ?
  - 6  = 4  What is ∆ ?
  + 7 = 10  What is ∆ ?
  + 3 = 15  What is ∆ ?

Now try this…
  + ∆ = 10  What is ∆ ?  Well, we are adding two of the same number.  So what number added twice = 10?  5+5 = 10 J
Your turn:

If    +    = 20, then  ∆ = _____
If    +    = 8, then  ∆ = _____
If    +    = 16, then  ∆ = _____
If    +    = 100, then  ∆ = _____

OK….now let’s try this.  Use the answer from the first problem to solve the next two.  If    +    = 8, then  ∆ = _____.  Plug your answer into the spot where the triangles are.  And  ∆ + 9 = ____________,  And   19 - ∆ = _________.
So 4 + 4 = 8, ∆ = 4.  Then plug in 4 for the next problems:  4+9=13 and 19-4=15
Now you try:

If    +    = 10, then  ∆ = _____
And  ∆ + 20 = ____________,
And   30 - ∆ = _________.
If    +    = 14, then  ∆ = _____
And  ∆ + 5 = ____________,
And   10 - ∆ = _________.

Find a good book...

You can use your child's lexile score to help find great books that are appropriately challenging and interesting!  You can use http://www.lexile.com/fab/ to search for books using lexile scores and interests.  Your child should know his/her lexile score (we took the test last week) or you can ask me if you need it again.   You can use the same website to determine the lexile score of almost any book too!
