Pollution Study Guide

Vocabulary

1. natural resource- a material found in nature that is used by living things; ex. water, fish, cows, air, cotton, trees, salt, soil, oil

2. renewable resource- resource that can be replaced during a human lifetime; ex. animals, plants, solar energy, water, wind

3. non-renewable resource- resource that cannot be replaced in a human lifetime; ex. natural gas, soil, metals, oil, coal

4. recycle- to reuse a resource by breaking it down and making a new product

5. reduce- to use less of a resource

Pollution:  Name the four types of pollution.  Give two examples of each.  *I provided definitions as well to help your child study!

1.  Land pollution: the ruining of the Earth's surface by misuse of the soil by bad farming practices, mineral use, business waste dumping, and disposal of urban wastes.  Examples of land pollution include soil pollution and improper waste disposal (littering), and landfills.

2.  Air pollution:  harmful substances gathered in the atmosphere that endanger human health or produce other bad effects on living matter and other materials.  Examples include tobacco smoke, smoke from forest fires, volcanoes, exhaust from cars and factories, and acid rain. 

3.  Water pollution:  the dumping or run off of pollutants into fresh or ocean waters that makes the quality of the water and affects the things living in it.  Examples include sewage, dumping from factories, mining and agricultural wastes, and oil spills all pollute the water. 

4.  Noise pollution:  unwanted sounds that are carried by the air, have an annoying and harmful effect on humans and other animals.  Examples include noisy vehicles, loud music, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, power drills, construction, voices, people, yelling, animals, factories, generators, stores, etc.

Be able to choose a type of pollution and explain how you could fix the problem.

Ways to control or reduce pollution: - make sure you understand can explain how these things can help to get full credit on the test.

• All:  writing to your legislatures and encouraging stronger anti-pollution laws
• Air:  Making more places smokefree zones
• Air:  Control over the kinds of fuel used in cars, airplanes
• Air:  carpool, take mass transit, walk or ride your bike
• Air:  turn off lights when you leave a room
• Air:  don’t smoke (it’s awful for you anyway!)
• Water:  not dumping things into water
• Water:  don’t dump toxic things down the drain
• Water:  don’t throw litter into streams
• Land:  anti-litter campaigns
• Land:  organic waste can be dumped in places far from residential areas
• Land:  recycling things
• Land:  buying recycled products, reusing things, donating things

Round Rules

Rounding Rules

1.  Circle the place value you are rounding the number to.

2.  Look to the right, and see what the number is:

*If the number is a 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4:  Forget the rest

*If the number is a 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9:  Round up to the next number

Third Grade HOTS Problem of the Week

Our higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) problem of the week will strengthen our problem-solving skills.  This problem will be homework throughout the week, and is due on Friday.

Daily Tasks

Monday:  Determine what information you know and decide what the question is asking.  Be sure to write in complete sentences with correct spelling and punctuation.

Tuesday: What is your plan to solve the problem?  See below for problem-solving strategies.  Will you draw a picture? Work backwards? Complete two steps to get the answer?

Wednesday:  Solve the problem.  Show all of your work.  Be sure to use labels. 

Thursday:  Thoroughly explain how you solved the problem.  Be sure to write in complete sentences and correct spelling punctuation.

Friday:  Turn in the HOTS problem.

Math Properties Review

Addition Properties Review

Why are properties helpful?

§  You can use them in during mental math to help you add the easiest numbers together first. 

§  Remember “compatible numbers”  1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6, 5+5

Commutative Property AKA the “order” property

§  You can add numbers (addends) in any order and still get the same answer (sum).

§  Think:  commute or moving to a new spot. 

Examples:

6 + 7 = 7 + 6                                      28 + 17 = 17 + 28

WOW! You still get the same answer!

  13   =   13                                            45  =     45

Associative Property AKA the “grouping” property

   

§  When adding 3 numbers (addends), you can group any 2 addends first using parentheses, then add the third number, and still get the same answer (sum).

§  Remember, you do the “inside job” first – the problem in the parentheses.  Look for the easiest numbers to group together (compatible numbers) to put inside the parentheses.

§  Think:  you can associate (hang out) with any 2 numbers inside the parentheses

Examples:

Adding 6, 8, and 4:  You can group them in any way:

 

(6+8) + 4       or       (6+4) + 8      or         (4+8) + 6

Do you and your child volunteer?

I love to celebrate giving back and getting involved in the classroom.  I do this biweekly with "Caught Doing Good" - a program that highlights a service organization and shares it with the class.  I do this in lieu of weekly parent readers.

Last year, we learned about the Atlanta Food Bank, Locks of Love, a Women's Day Shelter, the Great Pyrenees Rescue, Boys Scouts and a few other great organizations. 

We also fund raised for our sister school, Mimosa Elementary, Relay for Life, and the Atlanta Food Bank.  My class raised $250.25 for Mimosa, 120+ donations for the Food Bank, and students and parents raised almost $600 in addition to my pledge of $250- a total close to $1000!!

Hello!  Per administration, we have been asked to wait to enter grades into the Home Access Center until all changes have been completed in the front office.  When they are up and ready, I will let yall know!!  Until then, no online grades.  Our apologies!

Can you believe the first week of school is over?

Wow! What a week!  I appreciate your support at home as we transition into third grade!  (Nightly homework exhausting any of you?!)

Please plan to attend Curriculum Night on Tuesday night - 6:00pm - please meet in the cafeteria, then come to my classroom (314) afterwards!

New words of the week:

Salubrious - adj - promoting health
Interdependent - adj - dependent on one another, working together (antonym of independent - each assignment/project/etc. is one of the two - we are developing positive habits that support each learning style. 
Exorbitant - adj - excessive.  *This week's spelling bonus word - if the students use it correctly in a sentence and turn it in on Monday, they get a sticker for their agendas! 

DRA:  We are currently testing the students using the DRA-2 assessment.  It takes ~20 minutes to assess each child, but the information gathered is very useful and will be a part of their independent work (Reader's Workshop) in class as well as books that they choose at home for their personal and weekly homework reading. 

The boys and girls have been so patient and hard-working while I am administering this - I am so proud!  We will have a DRA's DONE snack party on Monday, August 27 during ELA!  I would love some parents to send in a variety of healthy snacks/fruit/juice for it.  Please email me if you will send in something.  We have 22 students and 2 teachers. 

I will send out information regarding online textbook login and Study Island as soon as that information is sent to me.  (Our CST has been out of the office this week!) 

Please send in a magazine/file holder (they used to sell the cardboard ones for $1 at Target - I am not sure if they do anymore) for reading/language arts!

Heart for Africa - Serving!

Service opportunity:  I love to demonstrate giving back to the global community and raising awareness to the blessings we have in America.  On Saturday, Sept. 16, from 11-1:00, I will be packaging food for "Feed My Starving Children" at Peachtree Presbyterian Church - http://www.peachtreepres.org/Mission_GlobalFMSC.aspx  The ratio is 1 adult to 3 children - I would love for you and your family to join us as we serve others and have fun in the process!!  Please email me if you want to join!!
