Study Guide
Know the following vocabulary.
Rock: a naturally formed solid made of one or more minerals.
Streak: Color left behind by a mineral when it is rubbed against a rough white tile
Sedimentary rock: rock formed from material that has settled into layers
Igneous rock: a rock that was once hardened and then cooled and hardened.
Hardness: mineral property identified by the Mohs scale
Mineral: an object that is solid, formed in nature, and never been alive
Be able to explain how each type of rock is formed.
Igneous rocks are formed when rock melts and then cools and hardens.
Sedimentary rocks are formed from material that settles into layers.
Metamorphic rocks have been changed by heat and pressure
Know the difference between weathering and erosion and what each does. Weathering is when small pieces of rocks are broken off due to water, wind, or ice.
Erosion moves pieces of rock and soil.
What are rocks made from? minerals
Know the characteristics of clay and loam.
Clay: very sticky, smooth
Loam: partly sticky and smooth
What is the Mohs Scale? A scale that orders minerals from 1 – 10 based on their hardness. A mineral that scores a 1 on the Mohs scale is the softest. A mineral that scores a 10 on the Mohs scale is the hardest.
Understand the rock cycle and be able to label a diagram of the rock cycle.
