New SS Unit to begin 10/22

During the afternoons of ITBS week, we will begin our new Social Studies Unit, Individual Freedoms.  Depending on how much the students can cover with Mrs. Eelman while I am gone, we will test tentatively on Wednesday, Oct. 31.  I will base it on the students' needs once I return!

Please also remember that I will be out of the country from 10/19 to 10/28 and unable to respond to any emails, notes, etc.  Mrs. Juli Eelman, former MBES teacher (2nd and 3rd grades-some of the kids even had Mrs. Eelman last year!) will be my substitute while I am gone.  She is absolutely wonderful!

Update to Science Study Guide: 

What is the Mohs Scale?  A scale that orders minerals from 1 – 10 based on their hardness.  A mineral that scores a 1 on the Mohs scale is the softest.  A mineral that scores a 10 on the Mohs scale is the hardest.

Rocks and Minerals Study Guide

Test is Thursday, 10/18 (TAG:  Wed, 10/17) .

Part 1:  Write the definition of each word.

1. mineral: an object that is solid, formed in nature, and never been alive

2. rock:  a naturally formed solid made of one or more minerals

3. igneous rock:  a rock that was once hardened and then cooled and hardened

4. sedimentary rock:  rock formed from material that has settled into layers

5. metamorphic rock:  rock that has been changed by heat and pressure

6. rock cycle:  an endless process of rocks changing from one kind of rock to another  

7. humus:  the part of soil made up of broken down pieces of dead plants and animals

8. weathering:  the breaking down of rocks into smaller pieces

9. erosion:  the movement of weathered rock and soil

10. loam:  soil that is a mixture of humus, sand, silt and clay

Label the rock cycle and be able to explain it.

Explain the rock cycle in words: An endless process of rocks changing from one kind to another over time.  Any rock can end up underground, and with temperature and pressure, it can cause a rock to change to a metamorphic rock; wind and water break down rocks and cause them to change to form sedimentary rocks, and any type of rock that heats and cools can become an igneous rock. 

What is erosion? After rocks are broken down, erosion moves the pieces.  Moving water, slow creep, rainfall, and flood can all cause erosion.

What is weathering?  Weathering is the breaking down of rocks into smaller pieces.  Water is a main cause of weathering as well as wind and ice.

Bert Show "Big Thank You"  - We will take part in the Big Thank you:  http://www.bigthankyou2012.com/ we will each write multiple letters of gratitude for their service, commitment to America and our protection as well as their sacrifice of their own lives, time with family, etc.  Please consider writing letters, drawing pictures, etc. with your family.  They are due to the drop off point on 11/2, so I will collect them up until 11/1! 

Each letter should be heartfelt, handwritten, original, and free of any political statements. The purpose of the letter is to express thanks to the military personnel currently deployed outside the United States. We reserve the right to eliminate those messages that are political in nature and do not reflect a positive message in the spirit of Thanksgiving.

• All letters must be on 8.5” x 11” paper or smaller.
• Do not use glue, tape, staples, cardboard, glitter or otherwise attach anything to the paper.
• Decorate using crayons, markers, pens or pencils.
• Use both sides if you like, but use one page per letter only.
• Do not send greeting cards or photographs.
• Do not send anything except letters.
