Curriculum Updates for next week/Other announcements

Yesterday we began our unit in science, rocks, minerals, and soil.  TAG will test on Wednesday, Oct. 17 and the rest of the class will take it on Thursday, Oct. 18th.  Mrs. Vu's last day is the 19th, so she needs to be able to complete the unit (this is her big project!) before she leaves us on Friday, Oct. 19th.

My last day before Israel is October 18th.  Mrs. Eelman will be my substitute while I am gone - the kids are very excited!

***We will have no spelling or vocabulary quizzes on the week of Oct. 16-Oct. 19th!

That week is also Red Ribbon Week, and we will get to dress up!!

Tuesday, October 16th – “Sock It To Drugs” day; wear the craziest socks you can find
Wednesday, October 17th“Shade Out Drugs”; wear sunglasses
Thursday, October 18th – “Pair Together Against Drugs”; find a friend, dress alike (staff will still support finding a cure for cancer this day by                wearing dark blue and jeans)
Friday, October 19th“Team Up Against Drugs”; wear your favorite team colors, shirt, or jersey

Math Updates:
We take our final fact timing on Monday. (the exact page I sent home for practice today is the final test.)  No surprises here! We will also quiz on Multiplication Vocabulary on Tuesday.  (Posted last week!)  Then we will begin division officially! Yay!!

This coming week's Essential Questions:
How are multiplication and division related?
How are subtraction and division related?
How can multiplication and division be used to solve real world problems?
How can the same array represent both multiplication and division?
How can we write a mathematical sentence to represent division models we have made?
How do the parts of a division problem relate to each other?

How can we model division?

We will also continue with our graphing component of the unit.
How do I decide what increment scale to use for a bar graph?
How do I decide what symbol to use when constructing a pictograph?
How do you create a bar graph or table?
How do you display collected data?
How do you interpret data in a graph?

Division Notes:
·      Multiplication is putting together equal groups.

·      Division is sharing an amount into equal groups.

·      Multiplication and division are inverse operations.  They reverse each other.

·      Multiplication/Division Fact Family:
7x8 = 56
8x7 = 56
56 ÷ 7 = 8
56 ÷ 8 = 7
EQ:  How can we use the multiplication facts we know to solve division problems?
Question:  49 ÷ 7 = ?
Think:  7 x what = 49 ???
7 x 7 = 49.  So, 49 ÷ 7 = 7.
32 ÷ 8 = ?
Related fact:                 Answer:
8 x 4 = 32                      4
24 ÷ 3 = ?
Related fact:                 Answer:
3 x 8 = 24                      8
72 ÷ 8 = ?
Related fact:                 Answer:
8 x 9 = 72                      9
50 ÷ 5 = ?
Related fact:                 Answer:
5 x 10 = 50                    10

Dividend:The number being divided or shared apart *(The biggest number!)
Divisor:  The number of groups we are sharing the dividend into
*(how many groups we are splitting the big number up into)
Quotient:  the answer to a division problem
*(how many things are going to be shared into each group)
-Label each in the problems below:

I am also very proud of our class being photographed and posted on the Mustang Awards wall - Great job class!!
This is Chris, another one of my former students.  He and his friends began a comic last year, and have plans to sell it to benefit our sister school Mimosa!  Last year we raised $250 (the kids' money, not their parents!!) for families to buy Christmas presents.  :)
