Division Notes

Division Day 1
·      Multiplication is putting together equal groups.

·      Division is sharing an amount into equal groups.

·      Multiplication and division are inverse operations.  They reverse each other.

·      Multiplication/Division Fact Family:
7x8 = 56
8x7 = 56
56 ÷ 7 = 8
56 ÷ 8 = 7
EQ:  How can we use the multiplication facts we know to solve division problems?
Question:  49 ÷ 7 = ?
Think:  7 x what = 49 ??? 
7 x 7 = 49.  So, 49 ÷ 7 = 7.
32 ÷ 8 = ?
Related fact:                 Answer:
8 x 4 = 32                      4
24 ÷ 3 = ?
Related fact:                 Answer:
3 x 8 = 24                      8
72 ÷ 8 = ?
Related fact:                 Answer:
8 x 9 = 72                      9
50 ÷ 5 = ?
Related fact:                 Answer:
5 x 10 = 50                    10
Vocabulary:
Dividend:The number being divided or shared apart *(The biggest number!)
Divisor:  The number of groups we are sharing the dividend into
*(how many groups we are splitting the big number up into)
Quotient:  the answer to a division problem
*(how many things are going to be shared into each group)
